The word, church, is first used in Matthew 16 when Jesus tells Peter that he will build his church upon the bedrock of the identity of Christ. The word, church, comes from the Greek word, ἐκκλησία, meaning a called out assembly. THE church is the complete body of believers. A church is a local gathering of believers or a congregation of people of like faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Church is a place of worship. It is not a social club or a political venue. It is not a community center, athletic center, restaurant, or a thrift store. The church belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ and should be a congregation of born again believers. I am not saying that the church cannot have social outreaches nor am I saying that a church cannot have these other things. The church’s primary focus must always be the Master.
